Ukraine space plant hit and US wants more Saudi oil – round-up

Russian missiles kill three people in Dnipro, and Joe Biden wants Saudi Arabia to open the oil taps.

On Friday night, a Russian long-range missile attack on the city of Dnipro in central Ukraine resulted in the deaths of three individuals.

Local authorities reported that a roadway and a business that produces satellites and space rockets were both struck by the missiles.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the plant produced parts for Ukrainian missiles.

Ukrainians escaping the conflict in the farther east, where Russia has focused its forces, have flocked to Dnipro in significant numbers.

A missile, according to one homeowner named Klavdia, landed right in front of her window.

“It’s confusing to know where to hide amid attacks like this. Behind walls in the basement – everything falls down nevertheless “she said, according to Reuters.

While Russia’s ground offensive in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas has slowed down, there has been an uptick in air raids, many of which target urban areas.

A Russian missile attack on the city of Vinnytsia, which is located west of Kyiv and far from the battle lines in the east and south, resulted in the deaths of 23 persons on Thursday.

What ties Saudi Arabia to Biden

In his initial weeks as US president, Joe Biden declined to even initiate contact with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who serves as Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler.

US intelligence believes the Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s brutal murder, which sparked a massive international outrage, was approved by the crown prince.

But this week, as part of his Middle East tour, the president visited Saudi Arabia, which is another another indication of the far-reaching effects of the war in Ukraine. Even a cordial fist bump between the two leaders was seen on camera in the grounds of Jeddah’s royal palace.

Why the U-turn then? The price of oil is a major factor.

Washington wants Saudi Arabia to increase oil production to lower prices as energy costs rise, partially as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.

The significance of Mr. Biden’s visit has been covered in writing by our Middle East correspondent Anna Foster.

The RAF airmen were approaching Snake Island.

According to Flt Lt Lewis Travers, his duty is to prevent Russian assault.

He is one of 200 members of the Royal Air Force (RAF) who are now stationed in Romania and participating in a NATO operation to patrol the skies over Eastern Europe.

British aviation crews have been operating there since 2017, but everything changed in February after Vladimir Putin invaded the nearby Ukraine.

“Snake Island is not that far from the area that we frequently operate in. Being able to witness the battle between Russia and Ukraine has undoubtedly opened our eyes, “he told the BBC, Flt Lt Travers.

A small, important island off the south-west coast of Ukraine, Snake Island was conquered by Russia in the early stages of the conflict but was recently reclaimed by Ukraine.

Phillip Norton from the BBC traveled to Romania to see what it’s like to be deployed so close to a conflict.
