TSA Adds Gender Inclusive Option to PreCheck Application

Applicants can self-attest their gender, but must apply with their legal name.

By adding a new gender option to its PreCheck application form, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is taking a step toward greater gender equality.

It was announced earlier this year that the agency was updating the applications to allow travelers to select “another gender” in addition to the “male/female” option. Since April, applicants have been able to self-certify their gender, regardless of the sex assigned to them at birth, according to the agency.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement: “TSA remains committed to ensuring that all travelers are treated with respect and dignity.” For the LGBTQI community, this new TSA PreCheck enrollment feature shows our commitment to equal access and inclusion.”

In order to apply to the agency, applicants must provide the agency with their legal name.

The TSA’s latest effort to improve travel for transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming passengers is the addition of a gender option on application forms. Passenger pat-down screenings have been reduced and Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) units have been introduced, which the agency claims are more accurate and will replace the current gender-based AIT system.

Travelers can now select “X” as a gender option when applying for a U.S. passport, and the State Department hopes to expand the option to other forms of documentation in the future.

It isn’t just Lufthansa and Japan Airlines that have changed their on-board greeting to be more gender-inclusive, but many other airlines have done so as well.

TSA PreCheck expedites the screening process by allowing travelers to bypass the regular security line and not having to remove their shoes, liquids, or laptops. The Trusted Traveler Program costs $85 and is offered by the Department of Homeland Security.
