While campaigning for president in 2016, Vice President Joe Biden vowed to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah” for the assassination of a journalist in 2018 by state-coordinated means. Instead, Biden broke that promise with one simple tap on the wrist.

He’s perplexed as to why you find it so significant.

A reporter asked Vice President Joe Biden whether he could guarantee that Saudi Arabia wouldn’t target another critic in the future. “God love you—what a silly question,” Biden replied. “How am I supposed to know anything for sure?”

Vice President Joe Biden’s decision to fist-bump with Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince and de facto ruler, on Friday outraged critics of the regime, from the family of Jamal Khashoggi to his former employer.

“Hey, @POTUS! Are you keeping your end of the bargain?” From a Twitter account in the name of her deceased partner, Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, tweeted. It’s up to you whether or not MBS’s next victim is a blood sucka.

MBS was given a “unwarranted redemption” by the “intimacy and comfort” of the exchange, according to Fred Ryan, the publisher of the Washington Post, which employed Khashoggi.

Biden laughed when told that the fist-bump had sparked so much criticism after days of debate over whether he would shake the autocrat’s hand, although he said of Cengiz’s remarks that “I’m sorry she feels that way.”

It was Biden’s observation that the crown prince’s response was to deny his personal responsibility for the killing of Khashoggi in the Saudi embassy in Turkey four years ago.

As Biden put it, “He basically said that he was not personally responsible for it, and he took action against those who were responsible.”.”

In light of his long-standing criticism of Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses, Biden had already come under fire for meeting with bin Salman in the first place. A global fuel crisis has been sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February. The meeting was intended to help the region reconnect with China as it seeks to broaden its influence in the region.

As Biden began a five-day visit to Turkey, he declared, “My views on Khashoggi have been absolutely, positively clear.” In order to promote American interests in the region and reassert American clout, Secretary of State John Kerry is traveling to Saudi Arabia.
