In Columbus, Ohio (WCMH) — During the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Ohio law enforcement officers targeted dangerous boating practices.

Operation Dry Water, as described by the ODRN, is a national campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of boating while intoxicated.

Operation Dry Water has proven to be an excellent tool for promoting safe boating,” ODRN Director Mary Mertz said. In order to ensure the safety of state waters during the busy holiday weekend, “our officers were out there making sure that everyone was taking the proper precautions- from life jackets to alcohol avoidance.”

According to ODNR spokesperson Stephanie O’Grady, officers issued more than 500 boating citations and safety warnings, but only four boating under the influence violations were issued this year, compared to six in 2021.
