Jeremy Sochan, a rookie forward for the San Antonio Spurs, issued an apology after mistakenly disparaging Russell Westbrook in an interview at the NBA Summer League.

When Sochan was challenged to guess the term “triple-double,” he engaged in a word association game with Spurs youngster Malaki Branham. When Branham said, “Russell Westbrook got them a lot,” Sochan answered, “bricks.”

The video was shared by Bleacher Report on Instagram and quickly became popular.

In response to the footage, Sochan said on Sunday “It’s chitchat. I didn’t mean to be impolite.”

The former Baylor standout continued by claiming that Russell Westbrook is one of his heroes and that he named his puppy after the MVP guard.

My dog’s name is Russell Pic, and he’s been one of my idols ever since I started watching the NBA.

Owners may not enjoy trade requests, but the NBA commissioner and they must deal with them

There have been many jokes made about Westbrook’s play on the floor, particularly following the 2021–22 season when the Lakers guard had a difficult first year in Los Angeles. Westbrook had the second-highest turnover rate and shot 29.8 percent from outside the arc, which sparked “Westbrick” jokes all season long and into the offseason.

Westbrook’s future with the Lakers is uncertain as there are indications that both parties want to end their relationship amicably. Westbrook’s breakup with his agency of 14 years due to “irreconcilable differences” over where he would play in the last season of his contract added fuel to the flames.

As for Sochan, he will try to aid the Spurs in their rebuild as the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft. In his lone season with the Baylor Bears, the 2022 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year averaged 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals.
