Home Run Derby records: the most home runs hit in a single round, year and career

Some of baseball’s most prolific batting practice home run hitters will take part in the MLB Home Run Derby in 2022. Two-time champion Pete Alonso and derby veteran Juan Soto are two of the contenders.

Kyle Schwarber, Ronald Acua Jr., Julio Rodriguez, Corey Seager, Jose Ramirez, and Albert Pujols round out the rest of the starting lineup.

Although he’ll be the No. 2 seed, Alonso is the one to beat in this competition. To date, the slugger is the most prolific home run hitter in the history of the Derby and ranks second in the all-time home run list. In addition, he has the third-highest total in just one round.

Forgiving time limits rather than the outs system has resulted in a large number of derby records being set in current format. Sports Illustrated compiles a list of players who have smashed more than one homer in a round, year, or career in the Derby.

The number of long balls hit in a game

The record for the most home runs hit in a round will be hard to forget. When Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Joc Pederson faced off in the 2019 semifinals, this scene was staged. It took Guerrero three swing-offs to win the game 40-39, following the two 29-29 at the conclusion of regulation.

Alonso would go on to win the title, and Guerrero was left disappointed. Two years later, at Coors Field, Alonso hit 35 home runs, good for third place, while Soto hit 31. The 35 points scored by Alonso are the most in a single round without swing-offs.

In the first round of the 2022 Home Run Derby, Julio Rodriguez hit the most home runs of any rookie in the competition’s history with 32.

Year’s highest number of home runs

The fact that all of these totals were compiled after 2014 should not come as a surprise. Although some of the greatest fights of recent years have been highlighted.

Guerrero currently holds the record with 91 home runs in 2019, but Alonso should be given credit for never getting to bat first in a round and setting a total. However, because he was seeded eighth, Guerrero was forced to go first. This means that Alonso could only get 57 points because the cutoffs were so low.

Don’t expect anyone to break Guerrero’s record this year, even if Alonso wins as the No. 2 seed.

Rodriguez has already hit the third-most home runs in a single derby after two rounds of the 2022 Home Run Derby.

Most career home runs

It’s no surprise that Alonso already has the record, and Pujols, the No. 8 hitter in the list, will be taking the field this year. To some extent, Alonso is enhancing his legacy by going for a third straight championship.

Soto has a chance to break into the top 10 despite the absence of Pederson and Guerrero, both of whom had impressive stats.

Alonso, Soto, Rodriguez, Ramirez, and Seager will all be looking to make their mark in this year’s World Series, while Seager will be aiming to improve on his performance from last year’s World Series (he was knocked out in the first round by Mark Trumbo). As a result of all of this, Chavez Ravine is sure to be a raging bonfire on Monday night.
