Australian Billionaire Andrew Forrest Pledges Almost $50 Million To Fire Relief

The total amount of the donation is seventy million Australian dollars, with ten million Australian dollars going toward the mobilization of volunteers, ten million Australian dollars going toward immediate fire relief, and fifty million Australian dollars pledged toward long-term fire relief.

According to the official press release issued by the foundation, the donation amounts to a total of seventy million Australian dollars. Of this amount, ten million Australian dollars will be used to recruit volunteers, ten million Australian dollars will go toward immediate fire relief, and fifty million Australian dollars will be used as a “investment to support the development of a long-term blueprint for fire resilience.”

Forrest himself is quoted in the release, speaking about how the pledge is simply another example of Australians coming together in a time of crisis:

“With extraordinary bravery and dogged determination, Australians have banded together to assist those whose lives have been utterly shattered by these bushfires. The efforts that have been made across the country to support those who are fighting the bushfires, those who have been affected by them, and those who are seeking to provide support to people and wildlife are something that we can all be proud of. To everyone who has been impacted, our most sincere condolences and prayers are with you.

“At Minderoo Foundation, we want to provide immediate relief because, like so many other West Australians, we mourn the hardships of our fellow countrymen and women. We are aware that we do not have all of the answers, but we want to learn what the communities’ needs are and do what we can to assist them now and as they continue to reorganize themselves over the next few months.”

“In the coming weeks and months, people who have been directly impacted by these fires will need support that is both emotionally and practically oriented. They will need time to mourn the loss of their loved one and to come to terms with the emotional fallout of the event. Additionally, they will require assistance in starting the process of rebuilding their lives. Even though the ruins of someone’s house may no longer be recognizable, the fact remains that it is still a home.

“There are still memories present beneath the ash, and it is important to hold onto these. We hope Minderoo Foundation’s contribution will complement existing efforts, provide hope to those hurting and encourage others to help in any way they can – big or small.”
