Tesla-related crashes involving suspected use of advanced driver assistance systems like Autopilot have prompted 37 separate NHTSA investigations since 2016. There were a total of 18 people killed in crashes involving Tesla, including the most recent one in California.

There are typically more than 100 special crash investigations conducted each year by the NHTSA, which has previously helped develop air bag safety rules.

Despite a request for comment, Tesla’s press office was shut down and no one was able to contact them.

Before a recall could be issued, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) upgraded its investigation into 830,000 Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot in June.

Preliminary evaluations of the system’s performance in 765,000 Tesla vehicles were launched in August following about a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles collided with stationary emergency responders.
